Balancing an enormous business empire while raising 3 kids sounds like a herculean feat, yet Nita Ambani has mastered it for decades. With a net worth of around 3 billion, Nita Ambani has defied all odds, juggling between being an incredible mom and a phenomenal businesswoman. Her story, which is one of resilience and unwavering love, is no less than an inspiration for all the working mothers out there. Read for more.
Nita Ambani, who is known to be one of India’s most influential businesswomen, was born on 1st November 1964, in a middle-class Gujarati family. She started her career as a teacher and had a keen interest in Bharatnatyam. She was married to Mukesh Ambani, son of business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani, in 1985. Despite being married to a billionaire, she stayed away from the spotlight and chose to nurture her family life, dedicating her time to raising her three kids, Akash, Isha, and Anant.
Nita Ambani’s dream of motherhood ran deep. She once said in an interview “Even when I was in school, I would write long, copious essays titled, ‘When I’ll be a mother…,’”
However, her journey to becoming a mother was not easy as she had to face many hurdles. Her doctors told her that she could never have a baby. Nita did not lose hope and decided to go for IVF. The procedure was a success and she conceived her twins, Akash and Isha. Her pregnancy was a precious one and she gave birth to her babies two months prior to the due date. After 3 years of having her twins, Nita conceived naturally and gave birth to her youngest child, Anant.
“When my kids were still young, I’d give them Rs 5 each every Friday to spend in the school canteen. One day, my youngest, Anant, came running into my bedroom and demanded he be given Rs 10 instead. When I questioned him, he said his pals in school laughed whenever they saw him take out a five-rupee coin saying, ‘Tu Ambani hai ya bhikari!’ Mukesh and I couldn’t help but crack up,” Nita Ambani shared in an interview.
In an interview with Vogue, Isha Ambani once shared, "When my mother finally had us, she wanted to be a full-time mum initially. Later, she went back to work when we were five, but she was still a tiger mom. I remember, whenever Mom and I had fights, we'd call Dad to resolve the issue. My mom was way stricter. If we wanted to bunk school, dad would be like, 'It's no big deal' but mom would ensure we ate on time, studied hard, and got our playtime as well,"
"As much as I want to believe that women can have it all, I know that my mom gave it all up to raise us. But once we grew up, I also saw her balance work and home perfectly. Watching her play all these different roles—from full-time mom to businesswoman—I learned how important each facet is in a woman's life and how one needs to define what “having it all” means during these different stages," Isha Ambani told Vogue.
In an interview with TOI, Nita Ambani opened up about Anant Ambani’s health and explained that the reason behind it was that Anant was highly asthmatic and had to be put on steroids which accelerated his weight gain. Anant’s weight loss journey was very challenging and she did not want her son to go through it all by himself. "He had to lose weight for health reasons. A child does what his mother does, so I couldn’t be seen eating while putting him on a diet. So I went on a diet along with Anant. Whatever he ate, I ate. Whenever he exercised, I did too. If he went for a walk, I would go along. By virtue of being his mother, I lost weight," she added.
Nita Ambani has seen many ups and downs in her journey as a mother but she never let anything stop her. From planning her 1st pregnancy with IVF to raising three kids and helping her youngest child manage his health issues, she has seen it all. What do you think about her story?
