    Is HMPV A New Virus?

No, HMPV is not a new virus. In fact, it was first identified in the Netherlands in 2001. The virus is globally recognized, however it was due to the recent outbreak in China that it garnered a lot of attention.

In her post on X, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, former chief scientist of the World Health Organisation has shared “It's a known virus that causes respiratory infections, mostly mild.” She also urged people to take normal precautions just like those taken during a cold, like wearing a mask, washing hands, avoiding crowds, consulting a doctor if the symptoms are severe.”

Are HMPV Cases On The Rise In India?

There has been a rise in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India since Monday, when the first case was reported. So far, 7 cases have been detected from various Indian states like Bengaluru, Nagpur, Tamil Nadu, and Ahmedabad.

    Does HMPV Only Affect Children?

No, HMPV does not only affect children, but people of all age groups, however, the incidence is likely higher in children, older adults, and people who do not have strong immunity.

What Is The Prognosis Of Children Diagnosed With HMPV In India?

The first two cases were from Bengaluru, which included two babies aged 3 months and 8 months. The former has been discharged from the hospital while the latter is recovering.

The third case was that of a 2-month-old baby from Ahmedabad, who presented with breathing difficulties but is doing fine now.

Two cases were reported from Maharashtra as well. Both the children recovered completely and have been discharged.

This suggests that the prognosis of children with HMPV is generally good, provided they get proper and timely care.

Is HMPV As Serious As Covid-19?

Due to its overlapping symptoms with Covid, HMPV may be harder to differentiate. It may even seem that the virus is as severe as Covid. However, HMPV has been there for a longer period of time, almost 2.5 decades, which has led to the development of some sort of resistance against it. This is the reason why the symptoms are not as severe.

Where Can We Test For HMPV?

Tata 1MG told ET Now that they will be offering the RT-PCT test from next week which would cost anywhere between Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500. They further revealed that the diagnostics sector is well equipped to manage the situation as there are enough tests available.
