 A wave of the new influenza H3N2 virus has been seen across the country recently. This virus is affecting senior citizens and children under 5 years the most. The outbreak of Influenza H3N2 virus is increasing rapidly, raising concerns, especially for parents. Indian Council Medical Research (ICMR)  said that in the last two-three months there has been an increase in the cases of subtype H3N2 of influenza type A. The number of admissions to the ICU is increasing and health officials have suggested increasing testing.

People over 60 years of age and children under 5 years old are at high risk. It is a substitute for the Influenza A virus.     Former AIIMS-Delhi Director Dr. Randeep Guleria shared on the rise in influenza cases,“It spreads through droplets and mutates every year around this time.

    "We had a pandemic many years ago because of H1N1. The circulating strain of that virus is now H3N2 and, therefore, it is a normal influenza strain. But we are seeing more cases because as the virus mutates a little bit, the immunity that we had against the virus becomes a little less and therefore people who are susceptible tend to get the infection more easily," Dr. Guleria told ANI.

    Who does H3N2 Virus affect? 

    H3N2 Virus can affect people of all ages, but a child under the age of 5 and people above age 60 are more prone to this virus. Other than this, people with Asthma, suffering chronic disorders, and heart and kidney diseases are also vulnerable to H3N2 Virus.  A child with weak immunity levels is more likely to get affected by this virus.

    How to Protect Your Child From H3N2 Virus?

    With timely vaccination, you can protect your child from the H3N2 virus. Dr. Randeep Guleria said, During this time there are high chances of getting affected. People have become more casual and not wearing masks after COVID. He also said cases might rise after Holi but it is ok to celebrate Holi with your child. Be careful that your child is following all the preventive measures. 

     

    Apart from this, here are some daily practices that play a significant role in reducing the spread of this virus in your child-

    • Washing hands-it plays a significant role.

    • Wash hands after coughing, sneezing or wiping your nose using soap and water

    • Wash your own hands after you wipe your child's nose

    • Avoid using the same tissue or handkerchief by more than one person

    • Avoid sharing toys that your child put in his/her mouth and maintain proper hygiene

    • Avoid sharing clothes, and towels without properly washing

    Now that you understand the signs and symptoms of the H3N2 Virus, you know the importance of timely vaccination and preventive measures. Whenever your child is in a crowded place, make sure h/she is wearing a mask.
