5 Cracked Wheat Daliya Khichdi Recipes for Your Growing Child

Daliya recipe reminds everyone of their childhood days, when our mothers feds Daliya, especially the kheer or porridge or its variation sweet dalia. We all have heard and are familiar with the name Dalia khichdi. This cereal has never been off the shelf and is very popular as breakfast cereal. It is easy to digest, light for stomach and anytime a yummy option to eat. At least i like it a lot and so does my daughter (mostly the Laapsi). Today, I would like to share a few of my favourite dalia recipes with you moms, and also try to highlight why daliya should be an important part of our children’s diet.
What Is Daliya?
Daliya is essentially broken/cracked wheat or bulgur wheat used across continents as a health superfood. In India, we generally use daliya made from wheat, though we may have come across corn, barley and buckwheat daliya too. Some varieties of daliya are thick, while some others are thin in texture and consistency.
Is Daliya Good For Babies and Toddlers?
Daliya is made from whole wheat and is a great source of fiber, and keeps the digestive tract healthy. Daliya contains insoluble fiber making bowel movements easier for the child. It is a good source of proteins and lends quick energy thanks to the carbohydrate content in it. Additionally, daliya is absorbed slowly by the body, making the baby feel full longer. You can give daliya to babies after the age of 7 months.
5 Easy to Make And Nutritious Daliya Khichdi Recipes For Babies And Toddlers
Here are a few known, quick and healthy recipes for your child that will tempt even the fussy eaters.
1. Sweet Laapsi For Babies:
Here is the list of Laapsi ingredients along with preparation method..
Laapsi Ingredients | Quantity |
Broken Wheat / Dalia | ½ Bowl |
Jaggery | 1 Tablespoon |
Water | 3 - 3 ½ bowl |
Ghee | 2/3 Tablespoon |
Method For Making Laapsi For Babies
- Add ghee in a pressure cooker, followed by the broken wheat. Roast the wheat till it turns golden brown
- Mix jaggery and water together. Boil this mixture till the jaggery is completely dissolved
- Add the jaggery water to the roasted broken wheat and pressure cook on a medium flame for 3 whistles
- Once the pressure releases, scoop it out in a bowl and serve hot
2. Sweet Porridge/ Dalia Porridge Recipe
Here is the list of ingredients & preparation method to make sweet dalia Porridge..
Sweet Dalia Ingredients | Quantity |
Dalia/ Broken Wheat | ½ Cup |
Ghee | 1/2 Tablespoon |
Milk | 2 Bowl |
Sugar/Jaggery | 2 Tablespoon |
Cashews & Almonds | 10-12 |
Water | As per need |
Method To Prepare Sweet Dalia Porridge
- In a pan, heat ghee and roast the nuts and keep aside for later use
- In the same pan, roast the dalia for about 1-2 minutes, till it starts giving a nice aroma. Keep stirring continuously
- Now add milk, mix well and bring to a boil
- Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring in between. It may take longer, if dalia is thick
- When it thickens to your desired consistency and dalia is cooked, add sugar/ jaggery and mix
- You may add more milk or water to adjust consistency
- Mix cardamom powder and nuts in the end and serve
- You may also cook this in a pressure cooker till 2-3 whistles and then reduce the milk with open lid till you get desired consistency
- If using thick dalia then cook till 4-5 whistles
3. Dalia Upma For Babies

Mustard Seeds | 1/2 Tablespoon |

Chopped Vegetables (carrots, potatoes, beans, capsicum) | 1/2 Cup |
Green Peas | 1/4 Cup |
green chilly slit | 1 |
Salt | As per taste |
Water | As per need |
Method To Prepare Daliya Upma For Children
- Dry roast dalia till you start getting an aroma. Keep it aside to cool
- In a deep pan, add some ghee, mustard seeds, jeera and curry leaves
- When they start crackling add heeng and mentioned veggies
- Add water, turmeric, and salt and bring the water to boil
- Gradually add dalia stirring continuously to avoid lumps
- If cooking in a cooker close the lid and let it whistle for once or twice on a low flame
- If cooking in a pan then cover the lid for 10-15 minutes or till the dalia is soft
- You may add more water if need be.
4. Vegetable Dalia For Babies & Toddlers

Ghee/Oil | 1 Tablespoon |
Mustard Seeds | 1/2 Tablespoon |
Curry Leaves | 8-10 |
Chana Dal | ¼ Tablespoon |
Urad Dal | ¼ Tablespoon |
Cashews | 5-6 pieces |
Chopped Vegetables (carrots, potatoes, beans, capsicum) | 1/2 Cup |
Green Peas | 1/4 Cup |
green chilly slit | 1 |
Salt | As per taste |
Water | As per need |
Method of Prepare: Vegetable Daliya
- Dry roast dalia for 2-3 minutes till slightly brown and gives out roasted aroma and keep aside
- Heat oil in a kadhai/pan
- Add mustard seeds. When they splutter, add urad and chana dal curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds
- Add onions and green chillies(optional) and sauté till transparent
- Add cashews and sauté them
- Add all vegetables, sauté
- Add salt to taste and cook covered for few minutes
- Add 2 cups of water and let it heat
- Now add the roasted dalia and mix well so that no lumps are formed
- Cook on simmer while stirring in between
- Turn off the heat when water is absorbed and keep covered for a few minutes
- Fluff up using a fork and serve hot
